Embracing Māori Tikanga at Queenstown's Waitangi Commemoration

Waitangi Day is more than a historical milestone for Aotearoa, New Zealand; it is a call to embrace the values of kotahitanga (unity) and manaakitanga (hospitality). This year’s commemoration in Queenstown beautifully embodied these principles through a rich programme of cultural celebrations, organised by the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) and Kāi Tahu Papatipu Rūnaka e Whitu.

This significant event, held every three years in partnership with Otago and Southland councils, highlighted the importance of partnerships between iwi and local councils. It was a day that encouraged reflection, connection, and pride in Aotearoa's diverse heritage, and we were immensely honoured to be "invited guests" at this special celebration.

The day began with a pōwhiri at 9:45 am, a deeply moving ceremony where the local Queenstown Lakes community (hau kāinga) welcomed manuhiri (visitors) from outside the region. The traditional Māori greeting, with its powerful words of nau mai, haere mai, created an atmosphere of unity, respect, and inclusion. This sense of belonging resonated throughout the event, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.

Following the pōwhiri, attendees were treated to vibrant kapa haka performances, live music, and inspiring speeches from community leaders. The celebration of Māori tikanga through these performances was a reminder of the importance of preserving and honouring the rich cultural heritage of Aotearoa. As we listened and watched, the threads of whanaungatanga (relationships) and kotahitanga (unity) were woven throughout the day.

At noon, invited guests were invited to share kai in a communal meal, reinforcing the theme of togetherness. It was heartening to see people of diverse cultures and backgrounds gather in a spirit of openness and mutual respect.

For us at the Lakes Multicultural Collective, the event was especially meaningful. As an organisation dedicated to celebrating and supporting cultural diversity, being a part of the Waitangi Day commemoration was a beautiful reflection of our shared values. Witnessing the welcoming spirit and deep respect for Māori heritage reinforced our commitment to fostering inclusive spaces where all communities can connect, learn, and thrive.

We extend our gratitude to QLDC, Kāi Tahu, and all the event organisers for creating such an impactful and memorable day. It was a true celebration of Aotearoa's cultural identity, one that strengthened our resolve to continue supporting and celebrating our multicultural community.

We look forward to the next Waitangi Day commemoration and to deepening our partnerships with both local iwi and the wider community.

Ngā mihi nui! 🖤🌿
